TOYOTA LEADS THE TOKYO 2020 OLYMPIC TORCH RELAY CONVOY

Date: 06 Dec 2019 Author Type: Press Release

The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Tokyo 2020) recently unveiled the designs that will feature on the vehicles making up the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Torch Relay Convoy. The convoy will accompany the torchbearers, helping to create a festive-like atmosphere along the relay route and ensure its safe and smooth operation.

Commencing its journey on 26 March 2020 from the J-Village National Training Centre in the Fukushima metro, the Olympic flame will traverse all 47 metros of Japan, passing by many of the nation’s most famous and cherished sights along the way, blazing a trail of hope on its way to its final destination – the new Olympics Stadium in Tokyo.

DESIGN CONCEPT
The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Torch Relay Convoy vehicle markings are designed to embody the Torch Relay concept “Hope Lights Our Way”. The ochre-coloured section and the flame emblazoned along the sides of the car bodies depict the journey of the Torch Relay; a distinctive touch is added by the application of the fukibokashi colour gradation techniques used in traditional woodblock printing to the background landscape.

While each vehicle will have a specific role such as leading the convoy, checking routes in advance and supporting the torchbearers, they will all share the same goal - to deliver the flame that will light the Olympic cauldron in Japan’s new national stadium, incorporating the hopes and dreams of the torch bearers and spectators cheering it along its way. This message will be depicted in a sash emblazoned on the front of the vehicles, which will also feature on the torchbearers’ uniforms.

The convoy will traverse all of Japan’s 47 metros over 121 days, blazing a trail of hope as it escorts the flame to its final destination – the new Olympic Stadium in Tokyo.

OVERVIEW OF CONVOY
The Olympic Torch Relay will comprise the actual torchbearers and the Torch Relay Convoy of vehicles, which will accompany them. Supported by Tokyo 2020 Olympic Torch Relay Presenting Partner & Mobility Partner, Toyota Motor Corporation - the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Torch Relay Convoy will include a wide variety of vehicles and models, including environmentally-friendly hybrid vehicles. Its aim is to herald the arrival of the Olympic Torch Relay along each stage of the route and to help create a festive atmosphere among the torchbearers and the spectators cheering them from the roadside.
